Language Arts
Children learn language best when it is meaningful to them (useful) and is interesting (fun). Accordingly, our language development program is based on Whole Language Learning theory, which stresses creating a rich and varied linguistic environment. While all four language skills are highlighted at different times, the content and expression are always learner (child) focused. Students are encouraged to explore their environment under the guidance of nurturing educators. Language is taught explicitly during English language classes (Language Arts and R&W), but the learning does not stop there, as similar themes are carried through to reading time, creative arts (painting, music, dramatic, etc), social studies, P.E. and play time.
Creative Arts
Children love to express themselves! Through a variety of media, we honour our natural performers by giving each child ample opportunity throughout the week to show his or her uniqueness. Children paint pictures, draw, learn to dance, sing and play with musical instruments.
Math
While taught as a separate subject, Math and counting-related games and activities are an integral part of the each program within the curriculum, whether through measuring in science class or counting in P.E. and language arts. Math teaching is done using concrete items, such as blocks, to allow children to "visualize" mathematical concepts of addition/subtraction, geometry, and sorting.
Science
We believe strongly in the natural "scientific curiosity" of children, and our Science program is designed to heighten this by offering stimulating and thought-provoking experiments. We also know that the patience required for doing experiments based on the "scientific method" is not something humans naturally inherit. Accordingly, children need to experience the joy of seeing an interesting result that can only be achieved after a multi-step process; whether that be through baking a cake, growing a plant from a seed, or creating a sundial clock. Our goal is to start children on a life-long journey of exploring the endless mysteries of the world around them.
Reading / Writing
Study skills are an important part of future success in elementary school. Our students, therefore, also learn about English as a subject, just the same way native speaking children need to do. Learning to use a language and becoming fluent, though, happens best when a child does not know he or she is "studying". Our R&W program is designed to introduce grammar, spelling, and phonics "rules" through just the right balance of age-appropriate textbooks, worksheets and writing exercises, giving students the learning skills that they will need throughout their journey to and through University.
Social Studies
The primary goal of the Social Studies program is to help children learn about themselves by learning about others. The program content includes learning the basics of preschool socialization, allowing children to make the transition from home to larger group-based settings. By practising sharing, turn-taking, following directions, and playing as part of a group, children learn to consider the feelings and experiences of others, both near and far.
Physical Education
A "sound mind in a sound body" is best begun early. Accordingly, we not only take our games seriously, we do so often. Large muscle training through walking, running and sports are a large part of the week's schedule. This is equally true of small muscle training, which includes a variety of balance, timing and coordination-building activities.
